The 2026 Wyoming Cowboys season kicks off September 5 at Colorado State, and the current betting market frames it as a Mountain West rebuilding year for Jay Sawvel's program. FanDuel lists Wyoming at +152 to win the season opener as road underdogs, +1500 to win the Mountain West championship, and prices a full nine-tier regular-season wins ladder (from 3+ at -1250 to 11+ at +1900). The 6+ regular-season wins tier is -125, roughly the equivalent of an Over 5.5 win total.

This is the fourth Wyoming season under Sawvel, who took over as head coach when Craig Bohl retired in 2023. The Cowboys have won just seven games across the two seasons since Bohl's departure, going 4-8 with only two conference wins in 2025. If 2026 does not show meaningful improvement, Sawvel's seat gets warmer.

Regular-season wins Over 5.5 equivalent6+ at -125Over 5.5 at -110BetMGM -110

FanDuel has Wyoming shorter on the MW title (implied ~6.25% probability) versus BetMGM's +2000 (~4.76%). For a Cowboys backer, BetMGM's price is sharper. On the win-total equivalent, BetMGM's Over 5.5 at -110 also beats FanDuel's 6+ at -125. Line-shop where you can. A new-look Mountain West opens up the field

The MW is unrecognizable from the version that shipped Boise State, San Diego State, Utah State, Fresno State, and Colorado State out to the Pac-12 and other conferences. In their place: North Dakota State (moving up from FCS), UTEP, and Northern Illinois. The conference championship race is wider open than at any point in the last decade, which is exactly the environment where a Wyoming-tier program can steal a title if the pieces align. That is part of the case for the Cowboys +1500 futures play at FanDuel, even if the base rate suggests staying on a top-tier team is smarter.

Roster: transfer portal reshapes both sides of the ball

Wyoming lost significant production to the portal:

  • QB Kaden Anderson to Tarleton State
  • WR Chris Durr (top receiver) to Maryland
  • DL Lucas Samsula to Utah
  • CB Tyrese Boss to Arizona

Incoming transfers and returning starters that shape the 2026 group:

  • QB Tyler Hughes (William & Mary transfer, familiar with new OC Christian Taylor's up-tempo scheme). At William & Mary he threw for 2,330 yards and 20 TDs while adding 670 rushing yards and 11 rushing scores.
  • RB Samuel Harris returns after leading UW with 558 rushing yards as a true freshman.
  • RB Markel Holman (Western Illinois) led the Ohio Valley Conference with 1,063 rushing yards in 2025.
  • RB Diore Hubbard (West Virginia) led the Mountaineers with 335 rushing yards.
  • OL Rex Johnson and Braylon Jenkins return as two of the Mountain West's top tackles.
  • Defense: S Jones Thomas (57 tackles, 2 INTs), S Desman Hearns (35 tackles, 2 INTs), LB Ethan Stuhlsatz, LB Anthony Beavers Jr. (USC transfer), DL Jayden Williams.

The offensive-line strength paired with a three-deep running back rotation is the argument for the Cowboys running the ball better than they did in 2025 (when they finished 131st nationally in scoring at 16 points per game). New OC Christian Taylor was Hughes' recruiter at William & Mary, so the QB-scheme fit is genuine rather than nominal.

Two structural tailwinds for the wins-ladder over-side: no Power-4 opponent on the schedule, and Wyoming gets Hawaii, Air Force, New Mexico, and UConn at War Memorial Stadium. The Lobos and Huskies both travel to Laramie in late November when altitude and cold weather amplify the home-field advantage. Two headwinds: the road trip to North Dakota State (an FCS national power moving up to FBS) is a coin-flip at best, and the road games at UNLV and UTEP arrive back-to-back in November.

The betting case at FanDuel

Regular-season wins, 6+ at -125

Hero Sports' Ron Counts, whose season preview informed this analysis, calls for Wyoming to clear a 5.5-win total. FanDuel's tier-based ladder means the closest equivalent is 6+ regular-season wins at -125. The base case: Cowboys sweep the two FCS-adjacent home games (Northern Colorado, non-conference cupcake), take at least one from Hawaii or UConn at home, plus one or two other MW wins from the softer part of the schedule. Six wins is a reasonable central estimate; if you see the Cowboys as more likely to hit seven wins than not, the 7+ tier at +145 offers meaningfully better payoff.

Mountain West championship futures, +1500 at FanDuel

A 15-to-1 futures ticket on Wyoming implies roughly 6.25% win probability. The new-look MW is genuinely open, but Wyoming still has to beat multiple teams currently priced ahead of them. Numerically the +1500 is closer to fair-value than the +2000 offered at BetMGM (which implies just 4.76%). If you want conviction on the MW title, the win-total equivalent (6+ at -125 or 7+ at +145) is the cleaner build-up bet. If you specifically believe the Cowboys can win the conference, FanDuel's +1500 leaves less margin than BetMGM's +2000, so pricing preference goes to BetMGM there.

Season opener: Wyoming +152 at Colorado State

FanDuel opens the Sept 5 opener with Wyoming as a moderate road underdog at +152. Both programs enter the year with questions on offense and stability on defense. The FCS-adjusted talent gap is smaller than the road-underdog framing suggests. For a Cowboys backer, the ML is the sharper bet than the spread (typically -3 to -4.5 CSU); an underdog moneyline at +152 implies 39.7% win probability, which is closer to fair on a coin-flip-adjacent matchup between two rebuilding MW-tier programs.

Player props to watch

  • Tyler Hughes rushing yards, alt lines. Hughes ran for 670 yards at William & Mary; if UW's OC keeps designed QB run in the playbook, weekly overs on rushing-yard props have merit.
  • Samuel Harris rushing yards, weekly variance is high on a freshman coming into a three-back rotation. Bet based on matchup, not the season narrative.
  • Anytime TD scorer on the Hughes/Harris/Holman rotation on smaller-line games (Northern Colorado, San Jose State) will offer better value than headline WR props.
